About
Barbara Armbruster
Stefanie Stegmann
Photographic tale of a city: in the published edition MYCAI, by esefeld & traub, Barbara Armbruster surveys the megacity of Cairo. Her photographic gaze is a tender one, following the poetry of everyday life. She captures images and moods that convey a great sense of calm, whilst intuitively imparting the sensation of loneliness and abandonment; therefore, entering into a profound relationship with the urban agglomeration of Cairo. Her photographs show structures; surfaces; fabrics; they integrate lighting moods and depict tableaux. They feature people beyond the tourist hotspots; such as, in the still of a man lost in reading, whose likeness is captured whilst he is engrossed in a book, in a public space, at a gate, at an entrance/exit, seated, whose spirit, whose thoughts, however, are being moved – somewhere between the entrance and exit of fiction and reality. Likewise, softly window lit, sacredly so, a woman’s body posture and hand gesture reminds us, foremost, of a person at prayer, whilst she reverently – quite secularly – in that precise moment, busies herself in producing the nourishment common before all forms of faith: Bread.

Dr. Andreas Gabelmann
Dr. Andreas Gabelmann, Kunsthistoriker | art historian (Einführungsrede,
Städtisches Museum Engen + Galerie, Engen | introductory speech, 2018)
