Staged Photographs
“In her photographic works, which are shown in a larger series, she herself is the actor. The motifs are staged. Barbara Armbruster shows herself in various disguises, wearing old clothes from the flea market and wigs. She slips into different roles and identities, she assumes familiar, yet disturbing poses and postures that seem to correlate or contradict the space in an idiosyncratic way. There is something mysterious about the photographs, even if the spaces she shows are concretely nameable, such as ballet hall, cellar, field or living room. “(Quote from the introduction by Adrienne Braun to the exhibition 2008 Städtische Galerie Kirchheim)
