moved, touched, in between
Barbara Armbruster’s work focuses on a cross-cultural approach. Using the media of drawing, painting, photography and spatial installation, she explores the intercultural context between Orient and Occident, the exchange between cultures and societies, the relationship between tradition and modernity. Her own experiences are incorporated, as Cairo was Barbara Armbruster’s living and art space for several years. Since 2018, she has been developing patterns and structures in her very own visual language that build bridges between times and cultures. Her paintings on MDF or wood are created in the field of tension between ornamentation and abstraction, with the ornamental zones being built up in two layers: An initial symbolic structure of black acrylic paint is painted over and dynamized with white or coloured lines.
In addition, paintings on canvas from 2023 and 2024 can be seen, which follow on from the large-format group of works “Wondrous Encounters” from 2019: Flat, color-intensive compositions of geometric shapes oscillate between movement and calm, lightness and heaviness.
