Course of the Spaces in Between

The walk through the room installation by Barbara Armbruster in the Landesmuseum proves to be multifaceted and multi-layered: abstract components are accompanied by representations with ornamental pictorial elements, powerful reduced line signs on transparent foil spread out over the “Parcours global” with the colourfully painted floor plates scattered throughout the room. The artist was particularly influenced by the city of Cairo, which was her living space and art space at the same time for several years. In her paintings, she combines ornaments – as a global language – with abstract and figurative pictorial elements from different cultural regions and eras. This is also the case in her works on MDF boards, on which she combines the ornaments and applies them in black paint. She then paints over them in such a way that the recognisability is dissolved and another common linguistic picture level emerges. In this way she connects worlds, as with the “Parcours global” floor installation in the exhibition space. The starting point for the series “Step by Step” on plastic foil were the artist’s book pages she designed for the book “Meins” published by edition cantz in November 2019. The distribution of these works within and above the floor installation creates overlaps with works presented on the wall. And parts of their works are in turn reflected on the film.
